More and more people in the UK are turning to the internet to find a date. The advantages are perhaps obvious; it is easy, it widens your choice of partner and you can do it from the confort of you own living room.

Additionally if you are uneasy about approaching members of the opposite sex in traditional meeting places such as bars and clubs, or have had bad experiences with these types of dating then online dating can be a valuable alternative.

Whats more is it is now more socially acceptable than ever to date online and more and more singles are logging on to look for a date. In the same way the internet has now become a part of every day life so online dating is becoming the norm rather than a niche market.

But can it lead to success? Can you really find love online? The statistics are promising.

A recent study showed that some 94% of persons using online dating facilities who met their online date met again after the first date (source BBC). In fact it has been shown that couples who meet online are far more likely have a long term future together.

So give it a go. Who knows that gorgeous guy or girl that you may have been too shy to approach in person may just reply to your e-mail! If not what have you lost?

Speed dating for the older single

Speed dating may be quick but it takes a lot of energy, writes Anna Wise.
IT STARTED badly: 14 women and seven men. Even a novice could tell the numbers were wrong. A few women approached the organiser and offered to leave but I hung back. I knew that if I left now, I would never return to this bar perched on a plateau overlooking the Yarra.

This was no casual dinner. I was at my first experience of speed dating and I was nervous. It didn't help that the numbers were lopsided in the traditional too-many-females-to-males-ratio that bedevils dating for the baby boomer generation.

Stampede over, I was greeted by Brenda, a tall, spiky-haired veteran and self-appointed host. Within two sips of our complimentary glasses of wine we were swapping smiles and accounts of our few attempts to meet men. This was a normal bunch of women dressed to impress and I began to feel comfortable in their amiable and optimistic company. Brenda's experience showed, however, as she sidled away to nab a chair, from where she would have an opportunity to preen and pose from any number of angles.

The real business of the night began when we moved to tables, one woman per table, and began to chat for six minutes. A bell was rung to move men on. Each of us was required to note the number of each man and designate him friend or date. The next day, if both parties had indicated an interest, details were supplied.

My night began with Tombstone Teeth, who had extended the gap theme to produce artful bulges between the buttons of his maroon shirt. He was an engineer, with two mobile phones, one of which rang. The call took one minute. Five more to fill. I feigned interest in his job and the mobile phones, which we stared at carefully.

Then came Wonder Chin. I wondered where his chin was, maybe in the voluminous folds of his cardigan. He was South Efrican. I slipped into a nostalgic wrinkle in time since my first lover had been South Efrican. What was his favourite author, I asked. His blank stare drew me back to the present with a wince and sip of water.

Mr Charming seemed just that until we established that his daughter went to a school in the area in which I work. Surely not the parent of someone I teach? But alas, yes. What's worse, I knew his ex-wife and blurted out: "How could you have left her?"

At the end of the night, the organiser asked what could be done to enhance the experience. I suggested that the print should be in larger font for this age group (45-55) and enjoyed the laughs as I spun on my heel and into the night.

What I now know is that it is a good thing that there are few speed-dating events for the older single. It takes a huge amount of energy to flirt, feign interest in a stranger's job/ex-spouse/children/mobile phone, listen attentively, stay sober, suck one's stomach in, preen and pose, decipher the "date" card in the dark and maintain one's sense of humour.

Maybe that's why there are always more women than men: the multi-tasking element. And men are the scarce commodity after all. Speed dating presents an ideal opportunity for them to bask in the warm glow of undivided female attention: it's a type of boozy, soothing therapy. For six minutes, anyway.

Hilary Duff Dating Hockey Star Mike Comrie

Hilary Duff is reportedly dating U.S. hockey star Mike Comrie.

Hillary and Mike are said to have enjoyed a night out at Los Angeles restaurant Katsuya on Friday and apparently he went with her to Winnipeg, Canada on Saturday for the opening date of her new tour.

Hillary has had a couple of high profile relationships in the past.

So I suppose that the question is are they a couple or not guess we will have to wait and see because time will tell?

The Many Faces of Online Dating

Shoshanna Berman, an intern in New York City, is happily dating her ideal future husband: a nice, young -- and tall -- Orthodox Jewish man who is also outgoing and easygoing.

On date two, they bonded while scalping tickets at a Knicks game. Date ten, she remembers, was an all-night drive to Philadelphia.

"I would have married him if he asked me after the first date," Berman tells TechNewsWorld, "but it took him a few months to realize the truth." Now they are unofficially engaged.

Take away a few details here and there, and this could be anyone's "how we met" story -- including the fact that Berman met her beau at SawYouAtSinai.com, a dating Web site.

"My friend met her husband there, so I thought I would give it a try," Berman says.

These days, anyone who scoffs at online dating is either married or in the priesthood. The U.S. online dating market -- typified by such Web sites as Match.com and Yahoo Personals -- will reach US$932 million in 2011, according to figures from JupiterResearch.

Soul Mate Search
More than 20 million Internet users visited such a site last December, reported comScore. The top destinations were Yahoo Personals, Match.com, True.com, Spark Networks and Singlesnet.com. In short, from 18-year-olds in college (where there should be no dearth of potential suitors) to senior citizens, multitudes are logging on in search of love or companionship.

To be sure, not everyone who goes online finds a happy ending. Horror stories abound from the horrifying -- stalking incidents and worse have befallen many online daters -- to the annoying. (Hint: Using photos more than a year or so old always backfires.)

Sometimes it just takes a little patience to find your soul mate, says Robert Schwartz, author of Courageous Souls: Do We Plan Our Life Challenges Before Birth? Schwartz met his partner at JDate, another popular Jewish dating site. Several years ago, he posted a profile there but nothing came of it. Recently, though, in the most serendipitous manner possible, he connected with a woman, and they're about to move in together.

"I had been living in Oregon but thinking about moving home to Cleveland to look after my father, who was needing assistance," he tells TechNewsWorld. Idly, he perused the profiles in Cleveland and immediately gravitated toward the woman who would become his partner. "What I loved about her profile is that I could tell immediately she is spiritually aware. That is very important to me."

Fast-forward over several months of phone calls and visits. Schwartz is now moving to Cleveland.

Specialized Sites
It may be no accident that both Schwartz and Berman met partners on specialized dating sites. Mainstream dating site memberships are stagnating -- or, in some cases, shrinking. The proportion of paying customers has stayed the same -- 5 percent -- over the last five years, according to Jupiter.

Another Jupiter metric that suggests interest is beginning to decline: Only 10 percent of Internet users visited an online dating site in 2006 -- a decrease from 16 percent in 2005 and 21 percent in 2002.

One way the online dating industry is counteracting these trends is by introducing specialized Web sites that focus on commonalities that would-be daters hope to find. Many focus on religion; some focus on hobbies or professions.

Sparks Network, currently one of the top online destinations, operates over 30 online personals -- all but one of which is targeted toward a specific religious, ethnic or special interest group. JDate, launched in 1997, was its first site.

It makes sense, some say.

"Match.com is not for everybody," Todd Creager, a licensed clinical social worker and coauthor of Finding Life's Passions, tells TechNewsWorld. "There are those that thrive on generalized dating sites, but typically those are people who 'show well' -- whether it is due to looks, an extroverted style of writing, a natural sense of humor, social confidence, or some combination of these qualities."

Singles who do not make great first impressions end up feeling frustrated, he continues. "On a specialized dating site, one attraction may be the similarity of interests, vocation, religion, life challenges and so on."

Next Evolutionary Step
Specialized sites are the way to go for today's daters, says Steve Monas, author of several books about online dating and social networking, including Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide.

"When I used JDate, there was already a feeling of comfortability, knowing that there will be some commonality moving forward," he tells TechNewsWorld.

However, the specialized sites may follow the path of the generic dating Web sites, he cautioned -- unless they evolve once again.

"Dating Web sites are now trying to get appealing features that will compete with free social networking sites such as MySpace.com and Plentyoffish.com," Monas notes. These sites, after all, are de facto meeting places and have come to compete with some of the larger, specialized dating sites.

Revenue from major sites will have to come from more personalized services -- such as selecting and contacting potential matches on behalf of members, he suggests.

Indeed, some of the newer specialized sites are focusing on what happens once you get past the third or so date and become a couple. eHarmony, a dating Web site known for its hour-long application -- and, more controversially, for not matching gay people -- has launched a Web site aimed at married couples who want to strengthen their relationship.

On the other end of the spectrum -- the far end -- is HoochyMail, a service that "brings couples closer together by safely and securely allowing them to create and share their mutual fantasies," according to site spokesperson Rob Frankle.

Basically, HoochyMail allows each couple to compose and e-mail fantasies customized with their own details. There are about 35 different occasions -- from Christmas to Thanksgiving to basketball playoffs -- in the system.

Thus far, the site has been very successful, judging by almost every metric, Frankle says, including opt-in numbers and click-through advertising rates. "Plus, we have never received even one hate mail."

Funnyman Jim Carrey and girlfriend Jenny McCarthy are getting serious - the pair are moving in together.

The blonde beauty tells In Touch magazine the pair are eyeing a house in Beverly Hills, California, after dating for a year and a half.

She says, "I haven't moved yet and I haven't hired a decorator, because my dream house will be exactly like the one I have now - but with a 90210 zip code."

Carey has been married twice. He got hitched to Melissa Womer in March 1987 the couple had a daughter Jane Erin Carrey who was born six months later.

But the couple were divorced by 1995. Soon after the sparation from his wife Carrey started dating his Dumb and Dumber co star Lauren Holly.

They were married in 1996 but it lasted less than a year.

Carrey began dating Jenny McCarty in December 2005 but the couple have both denied that they are engaged.

'Speed dating' business

The increasing pace of bustling urban centres or a growing number of people who feel disconnected from the collective, are some of the factors that have paved the way for a modernist approach to personal interaction - speed dating.

Rationale aside, 'why can't networking in business be based on the same principles of the popular matching game?' was probably one of the questions Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) president, Pauline Reid, asked
herself before overseeing the implementation of a 'speed
meeting' programme.

Citing a deficiency in colloboration among businesses in the western city, she has orchestrated a series of speed meetings for its members as a means of strengthening the network.
Last Tuesday, the organisation held its second speed meeting at the Yatch Club in Freeport.

Reid told Sunday Finance that the programme is modelled off the popular speed dating game that matches couples. The meetings are structured in a "relaxed comfortable atmosphere", where members are allotted two minutes to exchange business cards and ideas. This is then followed by a networking cocktail reception where meetings and business contacts are cemented.
Reid, who noted that the innovative idea was put on the table last year by Chamber member, David Holland, said that the event has been an overwhelming success so far with over 100 participants attending the session on Tuesday.

"We did the first one last year and received very positive feedback," she told Sunday Finance. "This year we are practically oversubscribed by persons representing the various sectors of the city's business."
The Chamber president said that the programme was initiated by the fact that there was a desparate need to find creative ways to fostering trade among the city's businesses, which tended to unknowingly bypass its service needs to the nation's capital, Kingston.

"What you find happening here in western Jamaica is that you are doing business here but people tend to call Kingston to get whichever services they want," she said. "Most of the time they are not even aware that the services exist right here in Montego Bay. the programme will certainly bring about a certain amount of awareness."

Reid added that, though uninvited formally, there were a number of business persons from the wider community at the event, who also gave very positive feedback. She disclosed that plans were underway to formally incorporate business interests outside Montego Bay.

From Pig Pen to the pages of GQ

Something strange is happening in our household. I first got wind of it last year, when I noticed that our oldest son had actually begun to take some pride in the way he looked. I realized one morning when I went to kiss the top of his head (a habit of mine), while he was munching on a bowl of Lucky Charms, that his hair smelled good.

This surprised me, because my son was known for taking 60-minute showers and not getting wet. I also noticed that he had begun to use way too much fragrance and deodorant, but I decided to let that go. It was better than the moist funky smell of his pre-teens.

At first I felt a sense of accomplishment. After 13 years of telling him to take a bath, he had finally started to do it on his own. It reminded me of my own youth. I thought back to the days of seventh grade when I first put on the Old Spice instead of pouring it on the ant hill in my backyard. Reality suddenly spoke up. My mother's nagging had nothing to do with my sudden transformation from Pig Pen to the pages of GQ magazine. It was a girl named Candy.

Without warning, my wife and I now have a pre-dating manchild in our midst. Nothing formal yet, just the early signs of the impending disaster to come.

My son has become very ambiguous about his exact whereabouts lately and he is constantly on the phone. When I actually get a chance to answer my own telephone, I get hung up on. Something about my voice seems to stop teenage girls dead in their tracks, like deer in headlights.

I know we should just get him a cell phone, but I like picking up the receiver when he's on the phone and telling him to hang up in my loudest, most annoyed Dad voice. It surprises the heck out of him and the kid he's talking to. Any parent will tell you, it's the little things that get you by.

I'm okay with the new phase though. Things are moving at a nice pace. Movies, the mall and constantly begging for money; I recognize it all, it's the circle of life. I'm just enjoying the relative peace before he starts asking to borrow the car. I guess the reason I'm so okay with this is completely sexist. I know I've gone out of my way to teach my sons how to respect women and how to keep their hands to themselves, so I'm feeling good about them joining the dating crowd.

My daughter is another matter completely. She may have to move to another country if she ever plans to date. This new period in our household has brought out a bit of a different reaction in my wife. I call it the "what does that girl want with my son?" reaction.

Even though I haven't begun to worry about who our son is dating, I assure my wife that she's being a good mother by having high standards for our son. I figure she can keep the Lolitas at bay so I can get busy building the tower our daughter will live in during high school and possibly college. Good thing Home Depot came to town.

When our son was younger, many of our friends would look at him and tell us that we were going to have trouble when he started dating. I used to just smile and say a silent prayer. Now that time has arrived and in reality it's no problem at all. In fact, so far it's been a benefit. He's willing to do more chores for spending money and he smells much better now. I say it's a win-win situation.

Dating Columnist Thinks It's Ok To Bone Your Coworkers

"Odds are also that there's someone hot in your office you've considered dating. And to that I say: Go for it," begins romance expert Julia Allison's latest Time Out NY column. After all, she reasons, if things ultimately don't pan out, "there is always another hedge fund, publishing house or law firm willing to harbor you should you need to, um, extricate yourself." Wow, spoken like someone who has never had a real job. Maybe there's a counterargument to be made here. And we know just the woman to make it! You guessed it: Stevie Nicks.

In case you're not a Nicksian scholar, here's a quick timeline of Stevie's relationships during her time in Fleetwood Mac and her early solo career. When she joined the band, she and Lindsay Buckingham were not only an item, they were a singer-songwriter duo named Buckingham Nicks who'd recorded such cheesy delights as "Long Distance Winner" and "Frozen Love." Their debut album caught the attention of Mick Fleetwood, who headed up a British Yardbirdsesque blues-rock band called Fleetwood Mac, after Mick and his collaborators John and Christine McVie. According to Wikipedia, "initially, Fleetwood was interested only in Buckingham, but Buckingham stated that he would only join if Nicks was also invited into the group, stating firmly that he and Nicks were a 'package deal.'" Aww. Stevie and Lindsay joined the band on December 31, 1976.

During the recording of Fleetwood Mac's sophomore album, Rumours, Stevie recorded some songs about her relationship with Lindsay, including "Silver Springs" ("Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me/I know I could have loved you, but you would not let me.") Clearly, things weren't going all that well. Shortly thereafter, she took up with Don Henley (with whom she later recorded the cheesetacular "Leather and Lace.")

But during the recording of Fleetwood Mac's experimental, coke-addled, highly Lindsay-influenced third album Tusk (at that point one of the most expensively recorded albums of all time!), Stevie took up with... uh oh!... Mick Fleetwood. Talk about an awkward workplace scenario, vis a vis Stevie and Lindsay, who still wrote and sang songs in tight harmony together. This amazing video from the Tusk documentary gives some sense of the tension. It also contains a great version of the song "Angel," the best song on Tusk and the one that speaks most directly to the issue Julia Allison's column raises. "I started out wanting to write a rock and roll song, and it started out being much sillier than it came out. It didn't end up being silly at all. It ended up being very serious," Stevie says in the video, and that also pretty much sums up the arc of most office romances, don't you think?

Take it from Stevie, not Julia. He might be cute, but it is so not worth it.

TV stars film at village pub

TV presenters Fearne Cotton and Holly Willoughby dropped in to Lacock on Tuesday to film scenes for their new dating show.

The presenters, who are best friends, have teamed up to make a six-part programme called Holly and Fearne Go Dating for ITV1.

Set to be screened this autumn the show sees the girls trying to find partners for single people.

The pair were in Lacock with Melksham girl Charlotte Howard.

She stars in the last episode of the series where Fearne and Holly try to find her a suitable boyfriend.

They visited the picturesque George Inn, in West Street, Lacock, to film a discussion on the successes and failures of the day's matchmaking.

advertisementJan Harris, general manager of The George, said: "The crew rang a couple of days before to ask if they could film in the pub and reserve an area by the fire in case it rained.

"About 20 of them turned up on Tuesday, including Fearne, Holly and Charlotte.

"They set up outside and filmed the three of them sat on the wall with the pub in the background. It looked very pretty.

"They brought in an open-top car to put Charlotte in for one scene.

"It all took about two hours and then they all decided to stay for food so they were here till 10.30pm chatting and finishing their food.

"Fearne and Holly were tempted by the dessert menu but decided against having one. They have got their figures to think of.

"They were very polite and friendly to all the staff and regulars and didn't get in the way at all.

"They even signed the visitor's book alongside the signatures of Camilla Parker Bowles' daughter and John Craven who have both visited the pub."

Fearne wrote: What a yummy, yummy soup (tomato and basil) and a yummy pub."

Holly added: "Such a lovely, lovely place, thank you."

The five-day filming schedule saw crews visiting Miss Howard's home in Melksham, the town centre for location shots as well as Lacock and Bristol.

Fearne and Holly were rumoured to be staying at Beechfield House Hotel in Beanacre near Melksham with the rest of the crew for the duration of their stay.

Holly began her career modelling underwear and became a TV presenter in 2000.

She was voted 30th in the FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2006.

Fearne is a Radio 1 DJ and has presented TV shows including Top of the Pops, and Love Island.

Danger Signs

Does your partner say they trust you but still accuse you of flirting or fooling around?
Does your partner check up on you? Does he or she surprise you by showing up somewhere you have said you will be?
Does your partner track your time? For example, does he or she ask where you were for an hour if it only takes twenty minutes to get home from somewhere?
Does your partner isolate you from your friends? Do they hate your best friend or say that your best friend has talked about you? Does your partner get mad if you have a good time without him or her?
Has your partner pushed, shoved, slapped, kicked, or punched you? Have they grabbed you by the shoulders to "make you listen"?
When you defend yourself, does your partner say you are "talking back"?
Does your partner say he or she would not get so jealous if they did not love you so much? Do they say that you know what makes them mad and you do it anyway, so it is really your fault?
Do you apologize to others for your partner's actions? "They didn't mean it. You don't know them. They were just upset."
Abusive Behavior Medium Risk
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are in an abusive relationship.

It is not normal for someone to feel the need to check up on you. A classic sign of an abuser is dislike of the people closest to you. Typically, an abuser will try to separate you from your best friends by pointing out their faults. It starts with emotional abuse and moves to physical abuse. After a fight, during which they are abusive, abusers may become apologetic and contrite. They may be extremely loving and promise all kinds of things. At the same time, they may subtly blame you for the violence by saying you are making them jealous or that they love you so much they cannot help themselves.

If your partner is behaving like this, you need to get out. It will only get worse. Chances are your self-esteem has already been affected and you are beginning to feel badly about yourself. Being in an abusive relationship is confusing. You are never really sure if it is your fault or theirs. You may be thinking, "He or she has a point about some of their arguments." This may be true. You are probably not perfect. Nobody is. But often an abuser will take the truth and twist it so you do not know which way is up. You will find yourself trying harder and harder to please them and being less and less able to. This relationship could destroy you.

Has your partner become so jealous that you could describe him or her as paranoid?
Do you often find yourself trying to convince them that you did not do anything wrong?
Have they ever kept you somewhere against your will (car or house)?
Have they ever repeatedly commanded that you "tell the truth" even when you were not lying? Does your partner say you are sneaky and do you feel sometimes that you have to be sneaky to avoid fights or to see your friends?
Do they say they will die if you leave them or that they cannot live without you?
Have they ever talked about killing themselves?
Have they ever threatened to kill you?
Have they forced you to have sex when you did not want to?
Do you have to justify your actions, activities, and time with your friends?
Do you want to break up sometimes but feel afraid of what they might do? (hurt you, harm your family, tell others personal things about you?)
Abusive Behavior High Risk
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you are in danger. Run for you life! Your partner is extremely abusive and could seriously hurt or even kill you. If your partner is behaving like this, it is no longer safe to date him or her. It is time to get help and end the relationship. You will never convince them that you are innocent of their accusations. Until you break up, that is. Then they will say they realize that you are the best thing that has ever happened to them and they are sorry. But that means nothing. As soon as you go back, it will all start again.

Many abusers threaten to kill themselves when you try to break up. Will they? Usually not, but your partner needs help and it must be professional help. YOU CANNOT HELP THIS PERSON. You must tell someone you trust. In cases of dating/domestic violence murder, the abuser often kills her and then kills himself. That is why it is so risky when your partner is suicidal. The most dangerous time for a female ending an abusive relationship is when she tries to leave. Check out Safety Planning and Break-Up Plans in the back of the novel, The Breakable Vow.

You need to show someone this risk assessment, your parents if you are a teen, and then call the nearest domestic violence hotline. They can advise you about protective orders and safety strategies. Do not minimize the danger in this situation. It could cost you your life!

Abusive Behavior Low Risk
